Selous Wilderness & Zanzibar

Enjoy a safari then chill by the Indian Ocean, staying at a lovely camp and lodge,
well away from the crowds

Selous Wilderness & Zanzibar

10 days from £3,380 pp plus international flights.

If you’re looking for a short first time safari followed by a rustic beach escape, this low-cost option is a lovely holiday.  You explore the wildlife in Nyerere Game Reserve on game drives, walks and boat rides, the head off to the tropical island of Zanzibar for 5 days – a magical combination.

It starts in a lovely safari location, Selous Game Reserve. Less visited than many of the northern parks, you reach Selous by light aircraft and stay in a small tented camp by the Rufiji River, just outside of the reserve. Spend the next few days immersing yourself in nature with game drives, boat rides and walking safaris all showcasing different aspects of the flora and fauna, and enjoying candlelight dinners by the river.

You then swap the river for the ocean, as you fly over to Zanzibar and Fumba Beach Lodge on the southwest coast. Although just half an hour from Stone Town, this is a delightfully quiet spot, with lots of decks and hammocks, an infinity pool and attractive gardens. Diving, snorkelling and island excursions can be arranged, and with a 5 night stay you have ample time to unwind, treat yourself a spa treatment and enjoy fresh seafood, vegetables and fruit. It’s the ideal place to relax after your safari.

We have been budget-conscious when choosing the accommodations for this trip, so there are compromises to be aware of – the lodge is outside of the reserve so you have to travel in and out each day, and Fumba does not have the best beach on Zanzibar and it is not posh. Having said that, both places are friendly and they do a good job at the level they are, plus they allow you to be within some very special environments for a very reasonable price.

As an alternative to Fumba Beach, you may choose to stay at The Tides Lodge where we have a fantastic offer. You could choose to stay in a Beach Cottage if there’s just 2 of you, or if you are a family of 4 – 6, stay in a Beach House.

  • Great value safari and beach holiday
  • Exciting game drives and walks in Selous Game Reserve
  • Take a boat safari for a different perspective
  • Relax in a laid-back beach lodge on Zanzibar

Arriving at Dar es Salaam airport you are met and escorted to the domestic terminal for the short flight southwest to Selous. On landing you are driven to your home for the next 4 nights, the aptly named Selous Wilderness Camp. A warm welcome from the staff makes you feel instantly at home. Lunch, dinner

How wonderful to awaken to the sounds of the African bush! It’s worth rising early to take advantage of a morning game drive and your first proper look at Selous Game Reserve. At this hour wildlife is beginning to stir and the temperature is not yet too hot, ideal safari conditions. Your guide introduces you to the reserve’s diverse flora and fauna. After lunch and a rest back in camp you head out for a second 4x4 adventure, keeping eyes peeled for animal and bird life, returning for dinner. Breakfast, lunch, dinner

You set off into the bush, maybe exploring a different area this morning. If there is a particular species you’re keen to see, let your guide know and he will do his best to make your dream come true. This afternoon you might like to ring the changes with a boat cruise on the Rufiji River. You can hope to see crocodile and hippo plus elephant and buffalo on the banks. Birds are often spotted from the boat, too. It’s a relaxing way to view the riches of Selous. Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Another day dawns and you can choose how you spend it. As well as exciting game drives and boat trips, you can venture out on foot led by an armed guide. This is quite a different way to experience the bush: there is an undeniable immediacy with your surroundings, and your senses are heightened as you immerse yourself in nature. Your guide points out tracks, spoor, small creatures, plants with special qualities, all things you might otherwise miss. In the afternoon you once again board the 4x4 for a last game drive. Breakfast, lunch, dinner

There may be time for an early morning nature walk before breakfast, after which you are driven back to the airstrip for the flight to the coast and across to Zanzibar. From the airport in Stone Town you have a mere 30 minute drive to your next lovely home, Fumba Beach Lodge. The essence of tranquillity, this little owner-run lodge is far away from the crowds. Wander in the gardens, stroll along the sandy beach or simply settle beside the pool, it’s completely up to you. Dinner is included in your stay, so you needn’t stir far tonight. Breakfast, dinner

After all those early safari mornings you can indulge in a lie in this morning. Nothing is hurried at Fumba Beach and you have several days to enjoy all that Zanzibar has to offer. Following a leisurely breakfast you can ponder how to spend the day. Top up your tan by the pool and cool off with a swim. Lunch is available here but not included to give you greater freedom on how to spend your days. In the afternoon maybe catch up on some reading or doze in a hammock, that’s plenty for one day. Breakfast, dinner

If you want some action head to the watersport centre today where you can collect some snorkelling gear and explore the clear waters, maybe combining this with an idyllic picnic on a nearby deserted island. Kayaks are available to rent, so you can paddle yourself to the local village or venture into the mangroves, and divers will be in their element with a PADI centre on site. After all that you deserve some pampering and the Baobab Spa offers massages, beauty treatments or a long soak in the jacuzzi. Breakfast, lunch, dinner

Two more days by the Indian Ocean. You could be a lazy beach day, enjoying the sun, savouring seafood, relaxing. On the other hand, you might like to explore further afield: take optional excursions to Jozani Forest to walk among the trees and watch red colobus monkeys, join a spice tour to learn why Zanzibar has been called the Spice Island with its plantations of nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves, or explore the alleys, markets and sites of Stone Town. Breakfast, lunch, dinner

It’s finally time to head home. Enjoy breakfast by the sea and at the appropriate time you are collected for the half hour drive to the airport. Breakfast
