Elephants, Birds & Big Cats

A private safari exploring northern Tanzania’s Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater and Tarangire.

Elephants, Birds & Big Cats

8 days from £3,035 pp plus international flights.

This trip combines fantastic safari experiences with good quality accommodation and a private driver guide without breaking the bank. You’ll get Big Five game viewing in the Serengeti and Tarangire and visit Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater. Accommodation includes comfortable lodges, Maasai-run camps with wonderful views and a mobile camp in the Serengeti.

From Arusha to the Serengeti, via Tarangire, Lake Manyara and the Ngorongoro Crater, this is an unforgettable Tanzanian safari. And, as you fly out of the Serengeti back to Arusha, you spend the maximum amount of time game viewing in the 8 days – finishing with an amazing aerial view!

The jewel in Tanzania’s wildlife crown, the Serengeti is home to immense numbers of creatures. Its annual wildebeest migration is famous, but game viewing is spectacular here all year, from the Big Five to the Little Five (ant lion, rhino beetle, elephant shrew, buffalo weaver and leopard tortoise). Spot agile little rock hyraxes amongst the baobab and acacia trees of Tarangire’s grasslands, and picnic by Lake Manyara, watching flamingos and other birdlife, and keeping a lookout for tree-climbing lions.

You’ll have your own private vehicle and dedicated driver guide and accommodation is very good quality; this trip is excellent value. Spend a night in a lodge set in tropical gardens then 2 nights in a Maasai-run stilted camp in Tarangire with jaw-dropping views of the Rift Valley. A stay in a lodge with wonderful farmland views follows, then a night in a Maasai-run camp set in the endless plains between the Ngorongoro Crater and the Serengeti, and 2 nights in a mobile camp in the heart of the Serengeti.

  • Really good value Northern Circuit trip with your own private driver guide
  • Superb game viewing in Serengeti and Tarangire
  • Great birdlife at Lake Manyara
  • Wilderness camping in the Serengeti
  • Star gaze in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Beach extension

To extend your holiday and see
yet another side of Tanzania,
you could add a beach
stay to this trip.

Your driver guide meets you on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (JRO) and takes you to Arumeru River Lodge in Arusha (40 mins). Here you can chill out, enjoy the tropical gardens or take a dip in the pool. Dinner.

You’re on safari! Your driver guide collects you after breakfast for the 120km journey to Tarangire.  You’ll picnic in Tarangire and experience your first game drive before arriving at Maweninga camp, settling into your stilted tent and taking in those incredible Rift Valley views.  Full board

Morning and afternoon game drives give you plenty of opportunities to spot the Big Five and start capturing some memorable photos.  Picnic in the park or head back to camp for lunch. In the evening, sit out by the fire and watch the sun set over the Rift Valley. Full board

Bid farewell to your Maasai hosts at Maweninga and drive to Lake Manyara National Park (about 1.5 hours). Enjoy lunch by the lake’s intensely blue waters as you gaze out at the flamingos, pelicans and ibis. Then a game drive through the park brings you to Bashay Rift Lodge, where you could have a dip in the pool. Full board

After appreciating the beautiful farmland views over breakfast, it’s time to travel the to the vast Ngorongoro Crater, under an hour away. You have up to 6 hours in this wildlife haven where you can see all manner of species, such as wildebeest, zebra, impala, elephants, lions, and even including rhinos if you’re lucky. Tonight you’ll stay in the charming Olduvai Camp, with its star gazing deck and views of the endless Serengeti plains. Full board

Olduvai Camp is just an hour’s drive from the Serengeti gate, so you won’t have long to wait for your first experience of the wealth of game here. After a picnic lunch and more game viewing it’s on to Ronjo, your mobile camp. You have the option of visiting Olduvai Gorge, Museum and the Shifting Sands, though this will cut into your time game viewing in the Serengeti and is an added cost.  Full board

Whenever you visit you will see good numbers of diverse wildlife in the Serengeti, and the reserve is a beautiful wilderness of vast grasslands dotted with granite boulders. This will certainly be a day to remember! Picnic in the park or return to Ronjo for lunch before your final afternoon game drive, then it’s back to camp, where a Maasai warrior will escort you to the restaurant tent for dinner. Full board

Your holiday ends with an aerial safari as you fly out of Seronera airstrip to Arusha (flight time about an hour). You’ll be met on arrival and taken for lunch before being driven to Kilimanjaro Airport.  If you’re extending your holiday with a trip to Zanzibar you’ll be taken to the airport before lunch, in time for the flight to the island.
