Sand Rivers Selous

Sand Rivers Selous is one of the very best properties in Selous. Set on the banks of the Rufiji River, it offers a stunning location, plus romance, adventure, relaxation and great wildlife all rolled into one. It’s classy.

From the moment you arrive at Sand Rivers you will be well looked after by the Nomad team that runs this excellent lodge. This is after all your safari. Everything is flexible and geared towards making the most of what you want to do rather than being on a rigid schedule. Whether you want to go on a game-drive, explore the area on foot or take the boat out on the river, you will be able to immerse yourself in the beauty of this wild corner of the Selous.

Sitting and relaxing on your private deck or by the main pool, will not be a wasted opportunity either, soak up your surroundings, watch the birds and the wildlife down by the river.  During the dry season you can add another dimension to your stay and experience fly camping, just you and a mozzie net and the beautiful African night sky – perfect!

The one thing we should point out is that the rooms are open at the front. That means it’s not for everyone of course, but we just love this lodge.

Times to Go

Sand Rivers Selous closes for the rains from mid-March to the beginning of June. Peak (dry) season starts after these rains and last until about November.

Sand Rivers Selous rooms

The five stone and thatched cottages all overlook the river. Each one is built on a raised platform and is open-fronted so you can get maximum enjoyment of the beautiful views.  The en-suite bathrooms have hot and cold running water, flush toilets and refreshing powerful showers. Beds are covered by mozzie nets. The décor is elegant with neutral colours in keeping with the surroundings, a delightful place to relax.

The three hillside suites are perched on the slopes amid the greenery with a stunning vantage point.  They have everything the standard cottages have.  In addition, the suites boast a larger living space and a small plunge pool on the deck along with a day bed and comfy couch.
