Rufiji River Camp
This is a welcoming family-owned tented camp beside the Rufiji River in Selous. It’s one for more budget-conscious travellers, offering a good value for money base for exploring the Selous by land and water.
Rufiji River Camp is a long-established camp owned and run by the well-known Fox family. It offers land and water-based safaris at reasonable cost. Rufiji River Camp’s style is simple yet comfortable: polished wooden floors, high thatched roofs and feature stonework, all set within sight of the river. Relax in the upper storey lounge, swim in the pool beneath the thatched roof, watch animals and birds nearby, and dine by lamplight beside the river.
Days are varied, with a mix of 4×4, boat and walking safaris, all led by experienced guides and with bush refreshments as appropriate, adding up to an extensive safari experience in Selous Game Reserve. Fly camping is available for guests wanting a greater feel for life in the bush.
Foxes have other camps in southern Tanzania which combine well with this camp for a well-priced southern safari circuit.
Times to Go
Game viewing in Selous is good from about mid-June to February, with July to October being the peak dry season. April and May are the long rains, and November usually brings the short rains.

Each has an en-suite bathroom with a shower, 2 hand basins and a toilet, and a viewing deck to the front with a table and chairs. The front of the tent can be zipped closed at night.
The 3 suites are composed of 2 guest tents, each with its own en-suite bathroom and balcony, and a shared deck with a plunge pool, loungers and hammock. They are ideal for families or guest requiring extra space.
Twiga the giraffe likes this because…
“The camp belongs to Foxes Safari Camps who operate a charity called Orphans in the Wild which is dedicated to health, education, community support and orphanage programmes in southern Tanzania.”
