&Beyond Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp

Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous! This is a stunning, very luxurious but really friendly tented camp in a perfect location for the dramatic river crossings of the migration. Game viewing is incredible, the safari tents are sophisticated yet still perfect for their lush, forest setting. Hippos and black and white colobus monkeys wander through camp and the food and service are superb.

We could rave about this very high-end camp for hours. It’s located in evergreen forest in a stunning part of Serengeti on a tributary of the Grumeti River – known for its huge Nile crocodiles and all the turmoil of the Great Migration – yet it’s so isolated you feel that it’s all here just for you.

The river and plains are a frenzy of activity during the migration, but wildlife here is always spectacular, with prides of lion and lots of cheetah, hyenas and elephants.  A pod of hippos lives in a pool in front of the camp and some of them amble around the camp itself. This is the only area of Serengeti in which you’ll find black and white colobus monkeys – and they chatter in the trees around you and sometimes try to steal your breakfast!

Everything about Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp is beautiful – and that’s no surprise, as it’s run by And Beyond, who do these things properly. It’s definitely posh, but it’s also wonderfully friendly and charming. The tents are tastefully and luxuriously decorated and have gorgeous outdoor stone shower towers so you can shower under the millions of stars. The food is fantastic and attention to detail second to none. You have your own personal butler, and the staff seem to anticipate your needs before you voice them, while there are special touches like ensuring that your in-tent bar is stocked with your favourite drinks. Nothing is too much trouble.

The camp is also very welcoming to children, who are kept entertained by the WILDChild activity programme.

Times to Go

Game viewing is good here all year round, but the migration passes through in about June and July so this is peak time for this camp. It is closed in April, which, along with May is the long rains.

The tents are rustic yet sophisticated, decorated in tones of grey accented with natural stone and bone and bleached cypress wood.

Each tent has a large, shaded private deck with sofas overlooking the river.

Tents have overhead fans and personal bars, en-suite bathrooms and outdoor stone shower towers.

Beds are twins but can be adapted to doubles.

Two of the tents cater for families travelling together and are connected by an enclosed walkway that allows easy access between the tents while maintaining privacy.

Twiga the giraffe likes this because…

“Grumeti Serengeti Tented Camp employs people from the local community and supports local schools – it has recently built a dining hall for one of them.”
